Asoka expanded the Mauryan Empire 322 BC–185 BC and used elephants in battle, as weapons and vehicles, 325-185 BCE. His bloody victory over Kalinga, however, troubled him; he became devoted to peace and a follower of Buddhism and non-violence, including non-violence toward animals. Today in India, elephants are still valued for their great strength.
